FOOD JUSTICE IMMERSION

Grow Ohio Valley’s Food Justice Immersion provides an alternative break experience for college students, high school students, and other interested learners to build social awareness around food justice. With a blend of experiential learning and solutions-oriented service, students explore food justice through the prism of poverty, disability, food subsidies, social services, food deserts, nutrition, health, urban agriculture, food industry economics, and family food insecurity. Participants will experience first-hand that we can be beneficial change agents in our home communities.

  • ENGAGE IN ISSUE-BASED STUDY & DIALOGUE

Students explore the systemic nature of food justice issues – issues affecting many communities around the US and across the globe. Students meet with healthcare professionals, farmers, soup kitchens, beekeepers, community gardeners, and others working to create a just and sustainable food system.

  • TAKE POSITIVE STREET-WISE ACTION

We learn first-hand the struggles of families facing poverty with activities such as the “SNAP Challenge”-and dive into hands-on food solutions We meet the thinkers and doers in Wheeling’s food movement, studying successes, failures, and best practices to produce lasting results.

  • GAIN GARDENING AND COOKING SKILLS

We are determined to send every participant home with two new skills: gardening and cooking. Participants dig their hands into the soil and into their mixing bowls. When students leave our program they will be able to prepare a fresh, healthy meal from locally sourced ingredients.

  • BECOME AGENTS OF SOCIAL CHANGE

Participants take home the inspirations they discover with Grow Ohio Valley to improve their communities and personal lives, They leave more likely to make healthy food choices, to initiate a dialogue that improves community food justice, and to grow their own food.
